Politics
Our Curriculum Intent
The Politics department will bring out the best by encouraging students to develop their political awareness and allow them to question the world around them. Building a broad understanding of political institutions, processes and concepts will empower students to explore what influences government decisions and wider political debates. Evaluating contrasting political views and theories will create knowledgeable, informed citizens able to construct and support their own considered opinions. Engaging with politics allows students to make sense of the fast paced and ever-changing political landscape both in the UK and abroad.
In politics we challenge students to think critically about political developments and change, applying their knowledge of the UK and US political systems and governance, to explore what influences politics and society. Whilst studying Politics students learn to construct detailed explanations through chains of reasoning, to compare contrasting political views, and evaluate the strength of political arguments and weight of evidence which can be used to challenge or corroborate. Exploring the origins and evolution of liberalism, conservatism, socialism and nationalism introduces political ideologies and how these underlying principles still influence the nature of political debate today. Politics encourages students to actively engage with the political environment, applying their knowledge to current affairs and debate enabling them to see themselves as active, interested and informed citizens.
