Classics

Our Curriculum Intent

The Classics Department will bring out the best by enabling students to acquire a sophisticated understanding of Greek and Roman cultures. Students will critically engage with these cultures in a way that will enable them to develop an informed awareness of similarities and significant differences between the ancient and our own cultures and values. . We aim to create the very best classicists by engaging and enthusing students; bringing the past to life through the study of literature, history, philosophy, art and archaeology. This will help students to see the social, political, and economic impact that the Ancient World has had upon the modern world and how Western Civilisation was created. Students will emerge confident in their ability to apply their understanding of the major cultural achievements of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, which have had an enduring influence on the western world and thought for two millennia, helping them reflect deeply about themselves and the lives of others and enhancing the appreciation of cultural differences.
